Oh, and be nice to my reporters,
Dave and Isabelle from
Broca's Area
More reports coming Saturday afternoon and evening.
Dispatch 4pm ET, Saturday
Hey James!
I am back now to the hotel room and Dave is upstairs.
I met a nice man from Missouri who now lives in Buffalo. He had a neat
little gizmo recorder doo-hickey and he was taking notes with a
beautiful fountain pen in a little cute note book. Jim Milles is the
friendliest person I met at the conference. He gave me a button, his
podcast is called "Chek this Out! Podcast" and the address is:
cto.libsyn.com
The two talks I watched were about how to maximize your
listenership/traffic with Leesa Barnes, a corporate-type podcaster.
She gave a really good corporate-like talk which most people who want
to make money with their podcast would have enjoyed, but because Dave
and I don't really want to make this our "job", I didn't really enjoy
it. But she is great at what she does. I learned a few things though,
especially about "tags", what are they? All I know is that they are
helpful...
Then Mark Blevis talked about how to prepare for an interview, how to
interview, etc. The interesting thing about Mark is that he takes
notes on his hand, he writes his notes on his hand, and I think that
is BRILLIANT! Mark is a really good communicator, he speaks clearly,
and his professionalism is really what made this possible. The only
thing I had doubts about had to do with the constant reference to the
CBC. As if it is something to emulate. Well, it is, of course, if you
want to become a CBC broadcaster who podcasts. BUT, the idea of
podcasting in my view, is that it is for everybody and as such it is
open to all possibilities. If you keep saying..."here are the steps
for a succesful podcast...which I learned from the CBC..."then you are
mirroring...and you're not doing it "your way"...that's my idea...And
also, you are creating a wall between people and their microphone...We
all start somewhere and we all make mistakes. But the end result is a
myriad of styles and results.
Of course, there are certain basics that will never change.
Microphones, interviews, etc...the use of music...telling the
stories...etc...BUT I hope that people come up with their own thing,
that's what I like about podcasting. Everyone is different and should
be different.
Here are my thoughts. I am not a pro, I am not an expert, I have no
other reference but my own opinion...And that is that. However, having
said that, I believe that coming here was a very informative thing, I
had fun, we learned a lot about the quiet work of great people who are
doing new things and carving a place for their voices to be heard.
Which, in the end, is what we are all doing, whether we make jokes,
educating, or talk about our lives, or interview, or report, or
selling things...we are having our voices heard and exercising our
creativity.
Talk to you later...

Drunken swinger looks down from balcony above
Dispatch: Last night, a guy upstairs
from us talked to me from our respective
balconies. He saw me taking pictures of Dave while he was
watching Jim
Dupree's Laura Pauly Enthusiast. And the guy said, "what are
you here
for"...and I said..."we're podcasters"...he replied "oh ya,
you're
smoking some pot there?" "...not potcasters, PODcasters..."
"...oh...what's that?"
"Internet radio..."
"ohhh...hey...you wanna come down to the clubs with me? Or
maybe you
and your husband want a threesome or something...?"
"No thanks...hahahaha...have fun!"
"Ok, I'll be back around 3 am if you're still interested..."
And he was! He woke me up at 3 am the bastard! Right above
us. I could
hear him from our room. He was yelling things out of his
room's
balcony and just being an all round jerk...lol
